Are there any decent modern headlight replacements that would fit a '71 CL450? I put a sealed light in and it didn't last very long. It also wasn't particularly bright.

If you used a automobile sealed beam it wouldn't. Vibration kills them and the lense pattern is wrong also.
Original headlamps are usually a 35/45 watt bulb. Not enough if you ride at night, ok for daytime.
Buy a motorcycle rated headlamp with a replacable bulb, H4, and run a heavy duty 55/65w bulb for night riding.
Another option is to go with the LED conversion kits or HID although I don't think your charge system will handle the HID

Just for the record, I found a replacement headlamp, shell and all, on eBay, which came with a 55/60W H4 bulb. I replaced the bulb with a 35W HID, and couldn't be happier. The shell is chrome instead of painted, but it works. I had to make a bracket, held beneath the headlamp with the lower fork bolts, to mount the electronics for it, but it doesn't look too bad there.
