Hey guys
IM backkkk !!! With more broken stuff !! LOL
1982 cm450e hardtail.
the last 2-3 days ive noticed a slight burning oil smell.
and today getting off a 20mile ride on the freeway
we have smoke.
video uploading... to better explain where and how much.
it appears valve cover gasket leak and breather ?
what would cause this ?
helpppp lol

Video
and more info about whats going on.
Were at about mile 100 of the engine break in.
last rebuild I resealed the bottom crankcase cover. new clutch plates. and new seals all around on the bottom end.
I did not touch the top end. but I have some valve cover leaks... possible I got on it enough today that it actually got **Hot**. today was the first day over 80 in Arizona

Been doing some research. its either water in the oil evaporating.
makes a little sense after the long sitting time.
however. Im gonna pull the plugs and check compression.
also putting the new sprocket on tomorrow so Ill take a look. seemed like a lot of smoke

Think of the ways oil CAN get into the compression dome and onto the plug......
It's getting past and pushed up by the rings,... (After only 100 miles they probably aren't fully seated yet)....
OR, it's dripping down the valves,....(Did you install new valve guide seals during the rebuild?)...
OR, it's sneaking in (over or under, but along) the head gasket...(Did you correctly torque the head in stages?.... Were the cylinder and head checked for flatness? ... Are the oil guide pins in correctly?...)....
Another problem is that oil above the rings invalidates the compression test accuracy.....

Looks like there's just barely a trace of smoke/vapor there, that's pretty much normal for a hot running engine. Put a hose on that fitting and run it down by the rear motor mount, where it belongs, so you don't have an oil film all over everything.

timeline on the bike may help.
purchased in may 2015
end of 2015 I rebuilt the top end. full machine work and new everything.
last year I rebuilt the bottom end. *seals and such*
ridden around 100 miles since the bottom end rebuild. never saw oil in the cylinders before.
I feel its odd I had never seen issues like this before and now I am

Plug pics not hard to see which has oil what's odd is that it's up the thread. Is that normal ?

If you're getting oil on the threads it would indicate that there is excessive oil entering the combustion chamber normally. By the appearance of the plugs they are quite old. I suspect that the crush sealing washer is way past useable and is allowing compression to push the oil up the threads because that washer isn't sealing any more. Plugs can't be removed and reinstalled indefinitely, 4 times is about the limit.

I put new ones in today ldr. I had the same thought.
oil level was a tad low so I topped it off.
not seeing anymore smoke today.
going to keep riding her and we shall see if the oil pops back up

Looking at the pictures, the plug insulator looks dry and normal in color. The outside of the plug looks quite oily(valve cover leaking?), oil on the threads probably got there when you unscrewed the plug.

^you are correct. however this is not where the smoke is coming from.
today I looked closely. I can see the oil bubbling and burning into smoke on the pod filter itself.
It only happened on my ride home. which is more sitting in traffic than my ride to work.
I think the engine is just getting hot....
is the filter getting hot enough that oil is burning ? and I should relocate it to the back like someone else said ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
yeah valve cover keeps leaking. I am on oem honda gasket #3 and it always leaks.
is there a trick to getting it to seal ? lol I am about to just hondabond it..
pulled the plugs.
confirmed no oil in cylinders.
so I do have a valve cover/bottom head gasket weep. but its always had that.
what else would cause this.
I have never had a filter on the breather before. it was just open prior.
I am 50% sure the smoke is coming from the bubbling oil on the filter surface.
Nice collection of rattles for a "re built" engine, but that may just be the recording device. Reroute the fuel line, remove/alter the breather "filter restrictor", and attend to the cam cover oil leak. Whilst you have that cover off, re torque/check head bolts, valve clearance and cam chain adjustment. Also check balance chain adjustment.
You did fit the rear outer head bolt "seal tube" between cylinder and head that goes over the large diameter dowels?
end of 2015 I rebuilt the top end. full machine work and new everything. Was the head "skimmed"??
There will always be smoke and oily blowby gasses coming from that breather connection on the valve cover, put a hose on it so you don't to put up with the stink and the mess.
Oil mist yes, but no smoke from mine, any of them. i route the vent pipe to the chain area but we have had that discussion before.
Oil weepage from the cam cover using a new sealing ring, maybe it was dislodged during fitting, easy to do but also easy to check for when you finally check that all is ok by slightly lifting the cover when its in place, just prior to fitting the 2 bolts etc.. If your fighting to fit the cam cover your doing it wrong. I glue the cam cover seal to the cam cover.
How are the chrome dished washers and rubber bungs??
also the bottom cylinder gasket end surface has a small weep.i suspect it was from long ago. long story short. the head studs were rusted frozen. the bike has a new top end. but the bottom end mating surface inst 100% after the months long fight to remove the top end.
But its still weeping oil, from the rear outer cyl head bolt area, or from the central tunnel ?
As you know the rear outer head bolt area has the cam oil feed tunnel. The green oe gasket has a heat activated adhesive.
Weepage from central tunnel could be from inner bolt area of rocker carriers not having the copper washer, not having a mere amount of sealant, just enough to stop oil leakage at that surface ( surfaces between rocker carrier casting and head contact area ) , from the head bolt built on seal and their holes, or even between the cylinder liners and cylinder block, no large diameter o ring fitted or leaking.
Find the oil leaks.
its burning on the filter itself due to the filter getting too hot.
how hot is this engine getting? oil boiling inside the engine?? then yes expect "smoke" !! and a flashing oil light at idle when hot.
