has anyone had success with ditching the battery and going with a permanent magnetic alternator for a cl 360?

Do a search for CB350 modification. It is possible to run without battery but unless your racing it's a real bad idea.
The XS650 has a totally different charging system which does have some issues so permanent magnet conversion is a good idea. As already pointed out, 360 already has permanent magnet system but charge is marginal at low rpm (I've measuers about 0.5amps at idle but my bikes are modified)
