Installing starter relay in 79 CB400T

This is my first bike and first project. It has a kickstart but I need the ignition to work, the previous owners took the starter relay out so I need to replace it. I've purchased the starter relay and the two wires that run from the relay bolts to the battery (a shorter wire) and to the starter motor (a longer wire). I'm unsure of how to get get the wire from the starter motor to the relay. I've taken a look at this wiring diagram www.cmsnl.com/classic-honda-fansite/honda_wiring_diagrams/CB400A.jpg (accessed from here: A collection of classic Honda wiring diagrams) but it doesn't help me at this point.

I hope this isn't too vague of a question. Any help would be hugely appreciated!!

Please disregard that post. Going by the solenoid, I gave you info if you had a Hondamatic. Since it is a T model, and my computer is giving me grief and won't let me edit that post, here is the proper instructions/info.
Should be two large studs and one small stud on the solenoid. Don't use the one you have there. Get one for a T. The short cable you have there goes on one of the larger studs and the battery positive. The other longer cable goes on the other large stud and the starter at the other end. The red/yellow wire goes on the small stud of the solenoid. The other end is already going to your starter button. PM sent for manual. The wiring diagrams are in the Honda Service Manual.

The routing of the cable from the solenoid to the starter is up from the solenoid, forward along the frame then down past the front engine mount to the starter. Sorry I don't have a picture, hope this helps.

Hello again. Is it even possible to add a starter to this bike (I have a very hard time kicking it over)? There is an ignition/start switch already and a selenoid but no starter or hole for the starter cog (dont know what that part is called!) itself to connect to the bike. Sorry for the ignorant questions, I'm starting at the beginning here. Thanks again for the help!!

OK, let's confirm which model of CB400T you have. It sounds like you have the T1 which is spoke wheels, drum front brake, no tachometer, no electric start. The T2 version has Comstar wheels, front disc brake, tachometer and electric start.
If you have a T1 this becomes complicated but not impossible to do. It will be expensive though. The crankshaft has to be changed so it will accept and have the starter clutch. The lower case has to be changed so it has the starter mounts, hole for the starter drive and the starter pinion gear and shaft machining done.
I know it's more convenient to have the electric start but if everything is right in regards to the engine and tune these do start on the 2nd kick cold and first kick hot. I know because I rode mine yesterday. Not the 79 road bike but the 78 T1 I just finished.

Thanks longdistance rider! I just realized I didn't hit the "post quick reply"! It turns out you were right I have the 78 T1, I sure feel stupid for not knowing there was no starter, thank you for the clarification! I spent some time practicing kickstarting my bike. I was just having quite a tough time as I'm quite small and worried about the hazards this might cause in traffic etc. I think I've got it :) It still takes a few kicks to get it to turn, is there anything I can do to make this easier? The bike's still got a few issues that's for sure but she's up and riding - woohooo! Thank you again.

When everything is right with the engine, carbs and ignition they should start from dead cold on the 3rd kick. Hot should be the first kick. Mine starts cold 2nd kick, choke usually 1/4-1/2 on.
So how do you get everything right? Start at the basics, valve adjustment, cam chain adjustment, usually I say balancer now also but the early engines don't have an access plug so you have to pop the right case cover off. Correct NGK D8EA plugs gapped at .026". Correct resistance in the plug end caps, 5K ohms. Replacements are cheap using NGK #XD05F. Carbs sync'd and mixtures set.
