While you’re already doing the work, why not upgrade to an LED? The sealed beam lamp on these bikes is one of the biggest bears on the weak charging system - an LED gets you near breaking even at idle. I did my front end for about $80 all said and done, with the following parts:

If you’re attached to the old yeller, all the more power to ya, but the LED headlight is the most impactful mod I’ve ever made to mine. Dramatically changes rideability, visibility, and longevity.

It can be done, but it involves carefully cutting the sealed beam glass and putting in an H4 socket, which I think would still be a major improvement over the sealed beam (can ya tell I have a special hatred for those old Stanley units? :D ). Trying to keep it original?
