When wiring in a voltmeter, should it have a direct connection to the battery? I am thinking if it is wired into the harness it can provide incorrect information from the draw of other items like the headlight. Is this correct?

The draw of various items won't really make a difference in the accuracy of the voltmeter. That said, depending on the state of your wiring (old and dirty wires and connections can have quite a bit of resistance) this could affect the voltage reading. There shouldn't be any issues connecting the voltmeter directly to the battery though.

I wired mine in to the black wire in the harness. This will give you the voltage of the electrical system when the bike is operating. That includes any loss from the issues that 76Twin lists. You want to know if there is a loss. If you wire it to the battery (red wire) then the volt meter will stay on when the bike is off.
