...in the gold metal-flake paint on my new project - a 1974 CB360.

Picked it up yesterday for a song from an ad on Craigslist (was there ever a better invention for the vintage bike nut?).

It's a project, for sure, but it's mostly all there and turns over with good compression and no ominous rattles or clanks. Doesn't run yet.

It's a low priority project. I won't really get started on it 'till I sell my current ride after attending Daytona this March.

So, if I understand what little I've read, the bike is a 1974 CB360K0? Engine number is CB360E-1008179. And, there are two small punch marks - one just before the C, and one just above and in front of the 1. I guess this means the 'recall' issues have likely been addressed? I'll find out sooner or later when I pull the engine apart.

So, what do I do with that paint? I'm tempted to buff it out and keep it, as it surely is a reminder of what a lot of owners did back then. The stuff is really thick, but is clear coated to be perfectly smooth. All I'd need would be one of the new, retro gold-flake helmets to go with it, some bell-bottom jeans, and I'd be stylin....

Paint stripper.......

The punch marks indicate that it receieved the cam chain tensioner upgrade.

You dont have much to lose by trying to save that paint. Just for grins, if it does have clear on it just wet sand it with some fine sandpaper then buff it out. You may be surprised at what you get. If you do have to repaint it I agree with using paint stripper and starting with bare metal. I have stripped a couple of tanks with aircraft paint stripper. The same stuff I use on the clear on aluminum parts before polishing.

I almost bought that, wasn't too happy about the title though then I got a message it was sold.
I think $400.00 was a bit much.
We'll have to get the Orlando peeps together sometime

Bill, I think you're outvoted!

I think it would clean up a little, but right now, the clear coat is so thick, you can't even feel the imperfections in the gold that you can clearly see. Actually, it doesn't look like metal 'flake' but rather like wrinkly gold tin foil covering the whole tank, then coated really really thick in clear. Kinda like restaurant tables that have decorations embedded in the varnish.

Unfortunately, it looks to be rusting from within. Some discolorations coming from UNDER the gold.

The paint is likely really old, because the title stated "gold" in the color column, and the title itself was dated 1983.

Tank is really rusty inside, and may not even be salvageable, but I'll surely try, eventually.

Should be a fun project, and my first street motorcycle when I was in highschool (1982) was my older brother's 1976 CB360T, which he bought brand new.

Hmm... didn't know we were voting, just opining.

Guess I've never been a big fan of gold, or metalflake in any color, even back in The Day when it was happening........

It is, of course, your bike..... :) :) :geek: :geek:

The under side of my soon to be re-painted tank has rub-mark deposits of gold flake showing through....is this a factory color I wonder? I've not seen a stock pic anywhere before displayin such a heart of glass... :?:

Well, now's your second chance!

In what has to be the quickest turnaround ever for me, I've decided to move on from this one. I just have too many projects already, between the Hodaka 250 and the little cafe project. Sigh.

Same $400, but now it has a clear FL title, ready to go.

I guess the Disco Fever burned itself out in me... :)
