For some time, I was thinking it Was the ign advance unit that was at fault? But speaking to an old Honda engineer at a show, said it was a carb slide fault too much air getting by at idle
your thoughts?

Also it could be carbs way out of sync/idle mix adjustment way off, timing issues or one cylinder really low on compression.
