First off welcome to the group. We'd appreciate a post in the member introductions section to let us know a bit about yourself and your bike(s). It would be helpful if you would include your location in your profile and create a signature that includes the specific model of your bike.

Don't know what you mean by "tinkering with the jets". Most likely your slow jet is non-removable and, unless it's dirty/plugged it's probably not the cause of your problems. If you browse the SOHC fuel supply and carburetion section you'll find a wealth of information. With that knowledge we'll be better able to help you back on the road. Here's a good place to start.

The slow jet isn't removable if you have the correct carbs, VB21's. It was pressed into place and tapping on the end of it to remove it destroys it. VB22's have a removable jet.
The only way I've heard of to remove it is using a screw extractor but that will cause damage to the inner bore which then has to be cleaned up to function again. Never tried this,

Start by identifying your carbs here http://www.hondatwins.net/forums/63...1654-carb-information-years-jetting-more.html which tells you the stock jetting and compare that to what you're running.
These carbs were setup originally on the lean side and we've found they benefit from having a 1 size increase in the primary main jet
A lean condition can be from air cut valves leaking, leaking carb insulators/boots or plugged passages in the carbs
After you rebuilt them did you sync them and then set the mixtures correctly?
Are you trying to run w/o the air box boots in place?
Correct sparkplugs? Valves adjusted? Compression in spec?

View attachment 35400 this is what i removed, a jet threads in behind it and these needles thread up in to the air way of the carb. i think if i can replace these with some that have a bigger opening for more gas flow.
