Hi guys i have a 1972 Sl350 K2 i got a new gas cap gasket/seal i cant get it on. the gasket has a groove in the middle that i think goes around the raised area on the vent mech. if the vent mech was removable it would be easy. so my question is the vent removable. thanks Ron

Take a pic of the underside of the cap. My CB360 cap can can that disk pried out, and that makes it easy to replace the gasket. But I noticed not all caps are the same...they must of had different venders, even on the later ones.

Yeah, if it's like the CB350 then it is difficult but not impossible to get the gasket on to the disk without removing the vent assembly.

I did a blog post on replacing that gasket. I found that the easiest way to do it is to start by stretching the groove over the bottom accessible part of the vent disk near the latch, then holding that in place and slowly going around the disk with your fingers.

thanks for the info. as my mother used to say patience is a virtue i finally got it started and used a very small screwdriver to lever the rest on like mounting a tire. thanks again Ron

Look carefully, some of the caps have a square piece of steel holding the seal parts to the chrome cap. The 4 pointed corners of the square hold the seal parts in. You can see 2 of the point of the square in my pic. Using a small screwdriver, you can pry the points up and the seal parts come out. Easy then to replace the gasket, and it will snap back in.

You can make out the left top point too, the left top point is barely visible.

I'm replacing this gasket right now on a '72 CB350, and have removed the vent assembly from the cap housing. Here's a question: Is the gasket supposed to capture the floating "ring" at the top of the assembly (in addition to the main part of the body), or is it supposed to remain free outside of the gasket? Please advise, thanks!

OK, I was hoping to get a response, so... I'll try again! Can anyone clarify whether or not the floating ring in the fuel cap vent assembly shown above goes inside or outside of the rubber gasket?? Intuitively, it seems to me the answer is outside, since I can't see any reason otherwise for having this ring separate from the rest of the assembly. Hoping that someone can offer an explanation - thanks!!

I just replaced mine on my CB360,and left the "floating" ring out of the assembly.Just for fun,I do have a cap which has a bolt in the center which comes out,so you can change the gasket quite easily!The only reason I didn't use it on my bike is that the chrome is pitted a bit much.

I believe the rubber seal captures the two discs.

So if the floating disc goes inside the gasket... what's the purpose of having it separate from the rest of the assembly?? That's the part that's puzzling me. Any thoughts?

It creates a 'holding place' for the fumes/droplets. Otherwise, they would be able to 'spill' out on the tank. If some accumulate, they are trapped until they drip down back into the tank. Remember it is not just a cap, but also a venting system.
