Thanks! I'm not a fan of the big Harleys, but I've always liked Sportsters. They need to be kept lean and mean and not junked up with all sorts of mismatched mods, though.

On my days off I polished the left engine cover, and swingarm covers/sets. The engine cover was heavily oxidized, had old clear coat, etc. I used progressively finer sand paper while finished with cutting compounds and Mother Polish: 320, 600, 1000, 2000, brown cutting compound, white cutting compound, and Mothers. The engine cover took me 8 hours (the first 5 being with the 320 grit, getting all the old gunk off) while the swingbar covers took just 1 hour. They turned out pretty nice IMO!

Thanks Dan. Have a couple of items to improve but I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Full disclosure - the chrome heat shield is a different one. The chrome on the original one was too far gone to save.

Very nice job on that exhaust XLX. I wish my original exhaust was salvageable.

I cut up an old pair of coveralls and glued/rivet to the original side covers added leather straps. only the zipper pocket is functional - keep documentation in there.

Before & After. The only thing decent on this bike when I got it was the paint. At least it was ~98% intact.
Frame-up restored. What killed me on this one was having to replace the rims and spokes. That was not anticipated.
