Hey guys. Right now I'm working on a 1982 nighthawk 450 project. I had a seized engine, so I bought and am in the process of installing a new one. An issue I have is that the lever on the right side panel attached to the clutch cable is stuck. Off of the engine the lever on the panel (I'm not sure the technical name) can we pulled on the pivot and will move back to place with the tension of the spring. When I install it on the engine the lever has very little movement, can move a quarter of an inch maybe. Is this normal? I can't remember how it was before I took the panel off (stupid I know). I was wondering if someone could shine light on if this is how it's supposed to be, and if not how to fix it. This is probably a stupid question, but I'm pretty new in the world on motorcycle maintenance and help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

This may have been a good place for a project log, easier to help with more background and pictures.

Sounds like you're talking about the clutch lever, #6 in this fiche:

When assembled, that lever pushes on a plunger that compresses the clutch spring and disengages the clutch. When pulling the clutch lever you have a bunch of mechanical advantage so it doesn't seem that hard to move. Just pulling the lever with your fingers is pretty much not gonna happen. If it won't function with the clutch lever when all is assembled and properly adjusted the clutch may be stuck.

New engine? Is it perhaps a new-to-you used engine?

Yeah exactly, it's #6 on that diagram. That makes me feel a lot better, I'll see how it works when I get everything assembled. Yeah it was a new-to-me used engine. crossing my fingers it was actually off a running bike like the listing said when I bought it. or I'm going to have to open another whole can of worms haha. Thanks for the help.
