replacing points

OK, my winter project is turning into winter/spring project :x . I just bought new points and have a few questions. I assume I just unscrew the old ones and put on the new ones, YES? How do I set the ignition timing after installation. Please tell me I do not have to remove the head! I am also waiting for some new plug caps since the others were a little rusty inside (screw n type).
