I just finished putting this motor back together. I got to the top end and installed the rockers and rocker arms. When I went to adjust the lash, the exhaust side is so tight, I can't get any gap. As a matter of fact, the right side cylinder exhaust valve is slightly open. Left side cylinder is at TDC, cam is in the 12:00 position and Cam sprocket is mounted on the cam with level line on top. Valve adjusters are turned out as far as they will go. What am I doing wrong???

Nothing wrong. The only spot on the cam that has some free play on all the rockers is about 90 counterclockwise from your current location.

Read up on setting the valves and which stroke you have to be on. BTW I wouldn't set the valves until the engine is assembled.

According to the manual, the adjustments must be made with the left cylinder at TDC. At this state, both the inlet and exhaust ports are closed. This condition can be inspected by shifting the rocker arms with fingers through the tappet holes and, if the the rocker arms are free, it is an indication that the valves are at closed position... The only reason I don't have the valve cover on is because I couldn't get any free play in the rockers so I removed the valve cover to see what is going on. IMG_5355.jpg

Just as your Passgae above says:
The LEFT cyclinder is on "EITHER the Exhaust or the Compression Stroke.
You need to rotate the Crank 360 Deg to move to a Compression Stroke.
Also you need ALL (8) Studs to be tightend down or the free play in the Valve Train will change as the head gasket and gasket stack of:
- Lower Cylinder Jugs
- Head Gasket
- Lower Rocker Box Gasket
- Upper Rocker Box Gasket
- Oil Splash Plate Gasket
All compress and change the spacing in the stack of parts

BTW: What Manual did you get that passage from? Is it a Clymers?
The OFFICAL - Honda 350 FSM says to use 90 Deg PAST TDC as the position where ALL Valves will be free and on the back side of the cam.

Just to be clear, I did have the motor completely assembled with the Oil Splash Plate torqued down when I was trying to make my adjustment. I downloaded the manual from the internet. It says it’s for a CL350. 90 degrees past TDC makes more sense that all valves would be free. My stupid manual says nothing of the sort. Thank you for the help everyone!

I went back and re-read my HONDA 350 FSM.
I have to admit I was confusing the CAM Tensioner Adjustment Point with the Valve Adjustment Crank Setting.

It is the CAM CHAIN TENSIONER that is set at 90 Deg past TDC - NOT the Valves.
While that point would "PROBALY WORK" - it is NOT the HONDA Suggessted point for Valve Adjustment.

The FSM Recommend that Each Cylinder have the valves adjusted seperatly at "LF and/or "F" for the Left and Right Sides.
With the COVER Off just make sure that you can WIGGLE the Rocker and that both intake and Exhaust are frre and not under tension from CAM lobe.
It either is tight rotate the Crank 360 Deg.

Page 33 of my FSM says valve setting at LT and T. Clymer does as well.

This is the manual I have. It says nothing about what Yendor is quoting. No where does it say to adjust the valves at "LF and/or "F" for the Left and Right Sides. I have read a hundred posts and watched too many videos. Not one video shows where to put the crank to adjust the exhaust valves. I think I have it figured out now but it's crazy to me that I can't find a video on exactly where to position the crank to set the valve lash.

cl350 john ... you set both valves for a particular cylinder at the same position of the crankshaft, on the respective cylinders compression stroke at the "T" or "LT".

Ancientdad, is there a manual available like that one for the SL350 as well?
I know they are basically the same motor in most respects, but there are a lot of differences elsewhere, unique to the SL model.

The manual above covers the K0 of course, but I haven't found one for the SL350K1 and K2 and there are enough differences that a specific manual would certainly be helpful after all these years. Hopefully someone knows where to find one

It is "LT" & "T"
