Here are a couple of links you can refer to and it should answer your questions. Re: what sandpaper. It all depends on how bad you current topcoat is and if you've done any filling with body filler. You can start with 220 or 400 and I finished up with 600. After priming, I wetsanded with 600 or 800. After the top coat and before the clear, I wet sanded with 1000 or 1200 but just enough to smooth the finish.

hm...$250 in supplies eh? and i don't have a spray gun. i might check out the local auto body shops.

thanks guys!
Go back and re read his article. That $250 number includes the cost of the paint cans (you don't need a gun) and there is also some $$ in there for some special plastic primer that you won't need unless you're doing a plastic shell and plastic side covers. I did not use anything but primer on my plastic headlight shell so it remains to be seen if I will have any problems (I don't think I will).

Any form of 2k clear is very rugged. I spray ppg 2k products and dupont 2k products which are polyurethane.

2k should hold up fine esp on a gas tank where gas cold spill. Spilled gas on my lacquer paited tank.....left a nice mark..that wont come out....maybe if i buff it.
