On a motor with older base, head top gaskets, if you loosen the top caps to work on the camshaft, would it break the seal on the head and base gaskets?

In my limited experience when an older gasket seal is broken it needs to be replaced or it leaks.

I ran into this debate when I was tearing into my motor. I think it might be OK to reuse, but my motor was an oily pig to begin with. Since my project theme is "doing it right this time", I went ahead and tore down the top end entirely and replaced all those gaskets (down to the base gasket).

To my mind, gaskets are cheap and engine teardowns are expensive (at least, they’re high cost to my blood pressure :D ). If it’s a paper gasket, it’s only like $40 and an hour or two to pull the jugs and replace the base and head gasket, but it’s a heck of a lot more annoying to see an oil leak and wonder if it’s because you didn’t replace them in the first place.
