I have a 1979 Honda CM400A and I am confused about the amount of new oil to add when changing oil and filter. The manual that I have says to add 2.6 quarts, but in the "capacities" section of the book, it says the capacity is 3.5 quarts. I know that the transmission runs in the engine oil but if I open the drain plug, doesn't it all run out thereby requiring 3.5 quarts to refill?

If your changing the oil and filter the other amount stays in the lines and torque converter. You only add the full amount after a complete tear down.

Moved to SOHC engine secton.

The 3.5 quart capacity (.3 qt more than the manual transmission models) includes oil that is trapped in the engine such as the valleys in the head that lubricate the camshaft. Add the 2.5 qt as directed, run the engine for a few minutes, let it sit a few minutes, check the oil and add as necessary.
