Hi. Im new to motorcycles & riding but loving it so far. Im in Columbus, Ohio.
I just got my first bike about 3 months ago, a 81 Honda Cm400 Custom. I've been doing minor repairs to make it road ready, and it finally is.
Just finished my basic rider course and i'm ready for summer!

Welcome to the group. Here's a thread with a lot of useful information:

http://www.hondatwins.net/forums/67-miscellaneous-discussion/16105-basic-checklist-new-you-old-bike.html

The bluing of your headers suggests you may want to address the carb jetting, you can find information in the SOHC Fuel and Carb section of the forum.

Do you have the factory service manual?

Thanks for the checklist. I did find a shop manual and I got the Clymer book as well.
I just had the carbs rebuilt, would the jetting have been addressed there?

Thanks

Clymer tends to have some errors/omissions, the authentic Honda shop manual is generally preferable.

Unlikely the shop changed the jets during re-build unless they knew there was an issue or work on these bikes regularly. The stock jetting on your bike is 72 primary main and 118 secondary main (the slow jet is "non-removable"). As long as you have stock air filter and exhaust you might replace the 72s with a 75s then do a series of plug chops to see where you're at.
