Just a quick post. Trying to get some insight. Took off the valve covers on the 450. Inspecting Cams and Tappets. Does the lobe wear seem normal for a old 450? Also noticed the edges of the lobes are razor sharp. Is that normal?

Not exactly perfect, but better than some we've seen. I would be inclined to run them as is, at least for a while. I like to add an extra .001" to the valve clearance settings, to leave room for a little thicker oil film between the parts.

I agree run it, as long as you can still adjust the valves. Excessive wear on rockers would prevent that.
Do let the bike warm up 4-5 minutes before riding, “required on the 450, and make sure your fuel shut off is working, fuel in gas and no warm up kills these engines. I shut my fuel off and let it run till it starts to die before I turn the key off, I also have clear fuel lines so I can see that the petcock is working.

And avoid using sealer...I wonder how much is covering the oil pick up pipe filter, and lurking in threaded holes waiting to burst a casting.

Don't use it.

New gaskets, or learn how to make your own.

I was able to set clearance .004"
I used the go - no go method.
.005" no go
.004" go

On to setting points/ignition timing. Wish me luck!

Mr Honda says 1.5 thou many of us set at 2 thou because it is easier to us a 2 thou feeler. 4 thou is more than twice the recommended gap and will be loud.
Why not follow the Honda specs?
