Jeremy, Yes you CAN run without a chain guard (if it is legal in your state)...HOWEVER,... The guard is there to prevent your becoming entangled in the chain, and to protect your leg in the event the chain snaps or the master-link comes out.... It's a good idea to keep it!
You can carefully mod one to fit around the shock by skilled hammering, just cutting away the offending area, or a combination of both..... Either way, you have to know what you are doing or you'll defeat the purpose of the guard or weaken it..... It is almost as easy to fabricate a new one out of 1/8 thick aluminum strap and/or angle stock.....
