Hi all, hope you're staying cool. Long story short, I rebuilt my CB450k6 engine and it's running well except for today I determined that my spark advance unit's springs are finished.

I've been having problems getting it timed properly and having some pops from the right intake so I've been redoing he whole procedure over and over again, including vacuum syncing carbs and tappet clearances.

Statically and with a strobe I've got LT timed perfectly but at 3000rpm, the advance marks continue well past the right of the timing marker. It's also hanging there before coming down even though the carbs are vacuum synched perfectly.

Earlier today it wouldn't advance at all and the timing marker would stay on LT. I had put a bit of grease on the springs when I originally assembled it and I think it was too thick and holding the springs closed.

I removed it, cleaned it with WD-40, made sure to not install it 180 degrees off and now it's advancing too far.

I've seen that people here stretch the springs a bit, find after market replacements or replace the whole unit.

I was wondering what you all would suggest? How can you tell a replacement advancer won't have the same problems? Other than the springs, mine is in remarkably good condition.

Thanks in advance;)

The newer PAMCO electronic ignitions remove the mechanical advancer completely and rely on a small "computer" to draw advance angles. I have one on my 500T and it works awesome. And, very little to no maintenance once it is installed.

I have heard that Mike's XS has advancer springs that will work in old Hondas, and might be cheaper than the electronic ignition.

Mikes XS springs do work you just have to adjust the ends a little as they are slightly long and yes they are cheaper than going full electric.

IF your advance is moving past the lines then its likely that the weight stops have either moved or have been worn over the years. You can bend the tabs back in toward the weights slightly or you can find something like shrink wrap for wiring and just add a layer or two of that over the weight stops. Its a very little amount you need to move them in to get them to go back where they need to be.
