Ran across this marking on the engine case today. Just above and behind the counter shaft.
Anybody know what it is? What it signifies? This is a 71 SL 350 engine.
It's not so clear in the photos but the markings are actually cast into the case. They are raised letters.
I would normally be inclined to assume it is a makers mark, but that would be in Japanese wouldn't it? :-?

My guess would be it's an indication of which mold was used for the casting.....Your 71 cases had the starter motor housing loop removed, so were a different iteration....
Hm is obviously Honda motors the .1 is possibly "1971 model" or possibly 1st iteration or mold#1
