I've got this small neodyme magnet and I'm toying with the idea to mount it inside the oil drain plug.

Looks like this.

I've got about 10 mm of metal in the bottom of the plug to drill and thread. Would you drill right throug or would you try to save a mm or two?

And then just screw in a small screw and lock it with Locktight. What do you think about this idea?

Interesting, can't hurt, as long as the whole thing does not get loose in the engine:) I'd go all the way through, put the nut on the bottom / exterior, so you can satisfy paranoid curiosity with a glance! put it together with crush washers for a seal. if it makes you feel better do it to it!

I have had a magnet in the drain plug on all my bikes for years, it is well worth doing. Having the magnet in the bottom of the plug will make it hard to clean when you change the oil--- you will be surprised how much crap it will pick up! I have my magnet sitting a little proud of the plug and just wipe it clean with a cloth.

I have not seen any hence my experiment. Here is part 2.

As an experiment I installed a neodymium magnet inside the oil drain plug. I drilled a hole through the plug and threaded it.

Then I put a screw through the center with plenty of thread lock.

Then just to be safe I put a nut at the other side (think it was Lee who suggested this, thanks mate).

Before mounting it I smeared some aluminium paste on the threads as it is very difficult to remove when changing oil.
