Do I need to add the regulator / rectifier combo, or
can I get away without it?
This swap is getting expensive, especially since I cant find one in Canada.
Many Thanks Guru's

The Radio Shack style bridge rectifier can usually be found for around three bucks.

I second the Kohler. They are cheap, easy to install, and mine has been working great for years.

It's also safe for LI-ION batteries.
and if I didn't already have an Oregon Cycle unit that was on my 450 when I bought it, I'd get one of yours to preserve my lithium battery... but mine works well, I have about 1500 miles on it in the last couple years (and it was apart for a year during) and my battery is very healthy. If my unit ever breaks, I'll come calling...
