I need to get a Honda air cooled 4-stroke single cylinder bored from it's stock 65mm to 65.5mm,I have the piston but don't have a shop to do it here locally yet.. I've lived here for 3yrs. so far and have had a couple local,independent powersports machinists who work part-time out of their house/garage help me a number of times so far but now it's kind of 'hit or miss'. They usually only like working for 'their buddies' :roll:
I'd like to bring/send this cylinder to someone who will give me a fair price and bore it to the factory specs of: .0006-.0015in. and get it done and then call me and say "come pick it up" :)

Bill - I know how it can be with the "buddy" system, have had to deal with that a bit in recent years since being out of the Honda service loop for so long. Hard to find a professional (and I use that term loosely in some cases) that you can trust to do the job properly and the way you want it at the same time. The best guy for boring cylinders in my area used to be one-third owner of one of the oldest Honda shops in the Tampa Bay area, but they sold the dealership a few decades ago and it has since closed. He continued to do machine work in his own small shop, but has long since retired from that and may have passed away as well, don't know for sure. So, I'm left with a fairly trustworthy resource in a local speed shop I've known for 20+ years and who has done a ton of work for many locals I'm familiar with. It's a long-distance ship, but if you aren't able to find anyone you're comfortable with, I could pass along their info. They are going to do my cylinders soon. You can find them at unitedspeedworld.com (but they re-did their own website a year or so ago, don't let the lesser website quality be an indicator of their machine shop capabilities :D )

Have you tried Honda? Maybe I got lucky, but years ago when I did a full engine job on my CB750 they were great. My local Honda dealer helped me order the right combination of rings/pistons/valves for the overbore, did the machine work on cylinders and head for a very reasonable price. They even gave me a hand putting the rings on and a few other small things for no charge.

I already have the parts/piston and I have called a few local to my area Japanese M/C dealers in the past 3yrs. to find out who will do machine work for me as they won't do it for me themselves;something about "anything older than 15 yrs." even if I bring them all the parts ! I'm sure they all send their machine work out anyway.The couple different small,independents machinists did good work for me but after a while they got weird and wouldn't return my calls,etc.
I'm now looking for someone who's friendly(pick up the phone,tell the truth & get the job Done!) and likes working for anyone who calls w/o asking me "Who told you about me" ? :roll: :) This used to be easier back a number of yrs. ago but lately it isn't.

If you're ok shipping your parts I highly recommend this shop that is about 40 minutes from my house. GREAT speed shop and they do all of the work in house - about 100 years of experience. They honed my cylinders, fixed the spark plug holes and had it done in a week all for $120.

I have a local guy I use but Bore-Tech would be my choice if he wasn't around any more.

I found a 'local guy' named Gino here about a week ago who i made 'first contact' with.. The man has a full time job as a machinist plus a big shop at home where he works kind of night & day to do Lot's of powersports machine work for a few local dealerships and other folks.. I came-along w/ my 'small job'(bore a single cylinder Honda XR200 .5mm over and fit the piston) for him to do($50 for the bore-job) and hope that he can get to it.I also showed him the XR200 single head w/ an exh. valve seat that has been ground a number of times to where it sits fairly low in the head and should have the seat replaced;he told me that he has someone to do that.Gino doesn't like to pick-up the phone though.. I just hope he does my job in a timely manner.
The weather is so warm lately that I'm getting 'itchy' for having that cylinder head exh. seat replaced and I'm Ready to want to put it into service right away.I'd like if i can at least get that head over to his contact who will replace the exh. seat.I will try to see if I can get him to do that and 'have it in the works' so I can get it back and install it in my little road bike for Spring which looks like it's coming early to me.
I still think the man is TOO BUSY w/ All that work he has lined-up at his 'home shop' previously to get to my small jobs and hope to find another fair shop who will take my work seriously and GET IT DONE and then call me and tell me "it's ready,come pick it up" for a fair price.I would like if the shop is close enough so i can keep on top of it w/o 'residing in Limbo'. ;)

Gino told me to call him on Mon. 4PM(Today!) and I did,no answer... called him again at 5PM.. :roll: and just don't understand what's up w/ this 'phone call lottery' :rolleyes: Maybe the guy picks-up a phone only when he 'feels' like it.
Stuff like this I don't need.

I called the man 'tbp music'/Bill Lane recommended on another thread started back in 2011' and his name is Jim.He did pick-up his phone and we spoke;he told me it will be about 1-2 months wait time to get the valve seat replaced because he has So much work coming in.
I hope this other man Gino who is local to me will let me know one way or the other(soon) what's going-on otherwise I'll be glad to go over there and pick-up my cylinder he told me he would have finished by now.

Does anyone know of a powersports friendly machinist in PA.? if not i'll need to be sending my head and cylinder far away..

I had the same issue. I sent mine out to these guys and they did a great job. They seem to know what they are doing and had quick turn around. They answered the phone for me each time I called and everything went well. RPJ Performance Powersports Machine Shop They are in NY.

$50 a hole. These guys specialize in boring, sleeves, bore-linings for power-sports. Heavy into performance 2-strokes. They can bore from 40mm to 120mm. Locally, I couldn't get someone to bore small sizes.

That sounds good pj,
I'll try to give them a call and see if they will replace a valve seat for me.I have an XR200 that has an exh. seat that has been ground down pretty low and should be replaced as it's causing the valve to be shrouded and I'm sure spring pressure on that valve is reduced also.I'd like to get the head out to someone good who will get the job done soon for me so I can get it on the road for the nice weather. ;)

Goodluck. Hopefully you get it done quickly. On the head issue, could it be cheaper getting a good used head from eBay?

I spoke w/ Rodger as he called me right back and he asked if Honda would sell the seat,so I called a dealer parts guy that i deal with and they said no.

I've gone this far with this head and it's got good guides.I orig. got this one from Ebay.. it's been in service for quite a few hours but still has good surfaces and cam bearings.I couldn't tell about the seat until after a while;the exh. seat is smooth,just ground down too far and I don't like that so I'll put a bit more $ into this head to get it nice.
I'll just wait to hear back from Rodger today and see what the price/turn-around time will be;he's up in NY.
I already got a price(and turn-around time 1-2 months) from that nice man out in TX. that 'Scrambler Curtis' recommended and he is very fair $ and very busy. :???: ;)

Valve seats aren't easy, and were never available from Honda as a part.
To replace, the old seat is actually bored out. Frozen with dry ice, the new seat "plug" is force fit into the hole that was bored.
Then the newly inserted seat is "cut" to the proper as-new geometry in the normal fashion, checking for valve extrusion.
It can get pricey, it's a precise, fussy job not to be undertaken lightly by those of my ilk.
The new seats are generally sourced from Kibblewhite (etc.), usually about $35 each, as I recall. New ones are much higher quality than old Honda stuff, and immune to the effects of unleaded fuel.
Then add the guy's time - and some heads need to have a jig built to hold them in place, so the machinist has to deal with that cost.
I reckon it would cost a bit over $100 to do one.

Valve guides are easier - parts again are high quality and cheap, the procedure is straightforward.
The old one is tapped out of a heated (usually) head, the new one goes in, then is reamed to size.
If the old guide is loose in it's "socket" or deformed, the machinist can remove the old one, then bore out its hole in the head to fit an "oversize" valve guide.

Thanks for helping my understanding on that process Bill; w/ a fresh seat that head will be 'good to go' for my use for yrs. I think it's $ well spent. :cool:
