It's generally felt that they work "OK", but not as well as a real oil filter.
Part of the problem is that these old twins don't have much oil pressure in the first place.
So even a small amount of clogging could completely stop oil flow in a paper-type filter.
The spin-type "filter" is essentially impossible to clog.
