Looking at 78 Honda Hawk. Appears to be in decent condition. It's in no way mint condition. It runs, and desn;t have any major issues except maybe, minor electrical, which does not appear to have any effect on running. What would be a reasonable price for it? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
To add my 2 cents worth, I bought my Hawk about 10 years ago and paid $800, it's now got 13K miles on it and is a lot of fun to run around town, but certainly not a highway bike. I may be dreaming but I wouldn't let mine go for less than about $1800.

Not perfect, but pretty nice for 40+ years old. Seller was the second owner and had it since 1990. Keep looking. They're out there.
I see one. It's ugly. 1980 CM 400T The exhaust is bluing close to the engine. The paint job on the tank and side covers is awful. Not sure if the bike is in good running condition. I would pay no more than $500 for the bike. I am not going for it as I haven't got a truck to bring the bike home.

Nice looking bike. Yours looks much shinier than the one I saw. Looks like you have taken great care to keep it looking nice.

I'll bet you could get close to that with the right buyer.

As far as pricing, I just bought this '79 CM400T for $1500 with 16k miles. Looks pretty much original except for that sissy bar. Only think it could use are the handlebar rubber bushings as the bars have about 1.5" of movement.

Going to take a look at 1981 CM400E asking price is 1800. It's not as nice as yours. Yours look very nice. His looks average. I like to have a kickstart, it doesn't. I can see from the cover that the internals are probably not different from a 1979 and it might be possible to add a kick if I could find one.

Yes you can add a kick start to CM/CB 400 series bikes. But you can't add it to the 450 engines with the 6-speed transmission. There are threads on it here, use the search function.
Thanks Alan.
Well, it looks like I have some more looking to do. Contacted the seller yesterday (Friday), within hours of the post appearing on Craiglist. The seller responded in about 45 minutes that I could see it in the evening or on Sunday. Since it was late Friday when we communicated, the light was failing, I suggested Sunday around noon, thinking some people might have church, and stuff. Did not hear from him. I sent a message again this afternoon. The seller said someone was going to look at the bike today (Saturday) and that he would let me know. He only offered Friday and Sunday as possibilities. I sent a message that I would get there ASAP right then. He did not answer. The bike has ben sold, it seems. I did not get a message from the seller, but the post has been removed. Oh Well. I shall keep looking. Although his messages were polite, I am a bit miffed. I understand he wants to sell his bike. I don't blame him for selling it. I probably would have been reluctant to pay 1800.

Bummer that people are like that. There are others out there. Keep looking. FB marketplace, Cycletrader, Shoppok.

It's usually first come first serve. I wouldn't refuse a good offer today if someone was coming to look at my bike tomorrow.
Yes, of course. None had seen the bike on Friday. He told me he was not showing the bike on Saturday. I was to see the bike on Sunday. But he decided to show the bike on Saturday. I even offered to go and see the bike on Saturday. I understand he just wants to sell the bike. It's not his responsibility to enable me to buy a bike. It's like he opened the shop on Saturday but kept some buyers out--is what I am miffed about. If a big business does it in awarding a contract, it would be illegal. A private seller is not bounded by strict legal confines. For example, a dealer must disclose all known problems to the seller, even if the buyer does not ask a specific question about a known problem. A private seller is not required to disclose all known problems. A private seller is only required to answer questions honestly and to the best of his knowledge and belief. If I ask a private seller, does the engine leak oil? His answer should be honest. But a dealer must disclose that the bike leaks oil, if he knows that, even if I don't ask whether the engine leaks oil.

That said, people are people. Sometimes people make mistakes. Time for me to move on and keep looking.

But I would have emailed you back to tell you, "Sorry it's sold."
Absolutely.

Well, I found a bike--a 2012 Honda Rebel 250. Even for me, it's a bit too short but at least I have a bike. Had to work on the carb right off. It wouldn't start, idle or run without choke. Guys at the Honda Rebel forum helped out with a lot of guidance and my wife by cutting out the gasket that goes between the carb and the intake plenum as well as in other ways. It runs fine now. Still would like to get a Rebel 450 or CM400T

Congrats. I thought about a rebel for my wife, but they are rather short. An average size rider will like the CM height much better. I see 200's and 400's fairly regularly in my area in pretty good shape for under $2k.

Here's an site that gives you an idea of how a bike will 'fit' you. It doesn't have every model, but many.

Thanks for the ergonomics link. It's pretty cool. I am willing to go up to 100 miles to get a bike. PA/MD border closer towards Washington D.C./Baltimore suits me well. I saw a Rebel 450 going for $3600. I decided against it. I paid $700 for the Rebel 250. It needed carburetor work and needs new tires. I shall keep looking.

Well, I did clean the carb and put two new tires (new tube too on the rear wheel) and got the bike (2012 Rebel 250) inspected and registered. Rode it 100 about 100 miles, an hour each day for three days in Nov. I shall ride it again when I have riding gear. It sat for nearly two months in the garage and started right up with a little choke. My son rode if for about half an hour filled it with gas and fuel stabliser.

for me it's mid-february if the roads are dry and it's above 45 - just a short ride
I might be able to do it on a nice day before spring too. My son bought me some gear for Christmas. Four jackets in various sizes winter and summer, styles, four pairs of gloves and an abrasion resistant pair of pants with pockets if knee armor. I still have although the jackets have elbow, shoulder and back pads I am going to buy better armor
