Had some interesting issues on a new 1971 CL 350. Clutch doesn't seem to engage. 2nd, it didn't seem to shift correct. Which way is what gear? I see to have a 1 up and 4 down from neutral, but I can't tell for sure.

Standard shift pattern is 1 down (to first) then four up (it skips through neutral)... This is assuming a lever directly on the shaft "pointing" forwards.....Most 350's had a linkage type shifter, and if one lever "points down" from its pivot and one "points up", the pattern is reversed as you discribe...(also known as GP shift pattern)....This also occurs if one-piece (non-linkaged) lever was flipped around so the passenger peg could be used as a rear-set

Interesting, I need to look at that. I thought it was supposed to be what you described. I don't think someone put this back together so well.
