So what's the trick to removing the old gasket under the cylinder. 1) I'm quite concerned with getting debris into the case below and 2) i don't want to start scoring the surface.

and for the head, should i take off the springs and get it resurfaced? (maybe media blasted while i'm at it)

An old (but clean) white t-shirt or two snugly stuffed into the case around the rod has always worked for me.

As far as cleaning gaskets, I've always used a straight utility blade and carefully shaved the old gasket off.

Not sure what to say about the heads.

I also use clean rags stuffed around the rods, but shop-vac before I pull them out....
