There has been some discussion recently regarding the proper orientation of the front axle caps on various model/years of Honda Twins. I haven't read the manual recently on removing/installing the front wheel but I think it is pointed out that the axle caps need to go in a certain direction and tightened so there is a slight gap in the rear of the cap.

I was messing with the front end of my '76 Gold Wing this evening and thought I'd post a picture that shows why this is important. On the Gold Wing, there is an arrow showing the orientation of the cap but I don't think that arrow is there on the earlier Twins.

There is about a .050" difference between the front and the rear of the cap which is what give you the gap at the rear when they're installed correctly.

Hope this helps.

That's the best photo I've seen yet, Mike - thanks.
Not many models have the arrows on them, and not many of the manuals point this out......

It is hard to notice unless you pay close attention.. I've been guilty of bolting things up the wrong way myself...
