Just getting started on a resto-mod of a 1963 CB77 and need disassembly help with the forks...specifically the lower chrome cover that fits over the top of the fork tubes. I have the ones with 4 small holes in the chrome covers. A friend who did a '67 said a strap wrench would do the trick but they didnt budge and he is not familiar with the version that I have (meaning his have no holes). Is a pin spanner wrench supposed to be used to remove these? Are they threaded?

Thanks.

There is a Honda pin spanner wrench for that purpose, but they are hard to come by. The chrome housings are threaded onto the lowers, and you may need to use judicious application of heat to loosen them up. Some people use leather or rubber to protect the housing, then use a set of large channel locks to remove them. The little rubber strap wrenches won't work, but one of the big ones with a stout strap can do the job. You can make up a custom pin spanner wrench, or try one of the Triumph ones that are listed on ebay. They are a bit pricey, though.
