I'm still learning when it comes to resurrecting my SL350 basket case, so please just chalk this one up to ignorance. My bike started life as a '72 - my understanding is this year and the '73 came with a 21 inch front wheel. Mine is beyond crusty, almost to the point of being unusable. Since I'll be riding mine (eventually...) primarily on the street, I'd prefer a 19 inch rim setup. Last month I scored a great deal on a 19 incher from a '71 along with some other misc parts. It's very clean and straight, but it's just the hub, spokes and correct wider SL rim. I went to assemble my '72 brake assembly to it, but it's too small for the hub. I went looking for a brake assembly, and found a very nice one advertised from a '71. Trouble is, it's the same as the one from my '72, and again, is too small to fit the hub.

I guess my questions are, when did the front wheel design change for the SL350, '71 or '72? (Or somewhere mid-year?) Also, in searching other hubs, the hole thru the backing plate looks different in pictures. Some have a larger circular hole like mine, others have a smaller "keyhole" type hole thru the center.

Does someone have some insight into the model year changes? How involved is it to swap over to the smaller rim I'm after? If I'm going to end up swapping damn near the whole front end, it may not be economically feasible...

There were actually THREE different hubs and brakeplates used on the SL 350's......
K0 used the regular CL 350 hub (44601-286--010) and -286- plate.....
K1 used the CL175 K0 hub (44601-235-000) and a "special" plate (45010-312-000).....
K2 used the 44601-340-000 hub and -340-plate....

What's your SERIAL NUMBER?...Correct parts go by "K", not by year of manufacture or title...

Give me a phone call Pops.....

Thanks for your time AND the education, Steve! After we got off the phone I made some measurements to verify this front wheel is indeed of the K0 variety. Looks like I'll be on the lookout for some CL front end parts!

Butch,

Hello this is David from S Florida. I sold you some SL350 K2 parts a while back. I have inner/outer front hub assembly for a 21" wheel. Send me a message if you need. Excellent condition. Will send pictures or measurements if need be.

Hey David, thanks for the ping. I'm actually getting away from the 21 inch wheel my bike has and retrofitting a 19 incher from a K0 model. Steve helped me realize the error of my ways and I'm looking for the right brake assembly for the K0 wheel now.
