I wasn't aware Honda was using the old bucket still. HM36 I think is the marking. That replaceable bulb lens looks like it appeared in 2001 with the 250 Nighthawk. The biggest problem is finding a unit with the mounting ears in the correct locations, from what I've read the aftermarkets all seem to be offset and some with larger threaded holes.
My son has a 1993 250 nighthawk it had the had the soldered in bulb and the headlight from one of my 1978cb400 was a perfect fit, I just cant see spending $45.00 on a dim light.
Since the headlight bucket is the same one as the original CB400T1, 2 and A models then I would do the simple thing and buy the later headlight, 33120-KPJ-670, with the changeable bulb and use a H4 55/60W bulb which was standard equipment. Headlight change took place in 2001.

So if i am reading this right and i also wanted to update my headlight on my 78 cb400a, i can get the headlight unit 33120-KPJ-670 and any H4 55/60W bulb and i should be good to go? Just making sure before i make the buy. thanks!
Yep, find a headlight assembly from a later model CB250 and bolt it in. Or if your bucket is good then buy the bulb ass'y. There's some on eBay. The charging system is sufficient for the 55/60W bulb, I've been running one for 7 years now
