Just bought a 1978 CB400A Hawk Hondamatic as a winter project. It sat since 1982. The brake fluid has turned to a sticky dust in the master cylinder. Do I use water or a solvent or what to remove the crystals? Is the master cylinder salvageable when it gets this bad?

You can try soaking it in hot soapy water. Unless you are doing a 100% correct restoration I would skip trying to clean it and simply replace. Much more cost effective in both dollars and time with the bonus of reliability.
