Ended up with a CL77 (based on the engine and frame serial numbers) that was someone's project, not a bike guy but I would like for it to end up with someone who is.
Anyone care to take a guess as to the year?
Frame Serial: CL77-1036XXX

Engine Serial: CL77E-1036XXX

After cleaning the gunk out of the bowls, I was able to get it to start, run, and drive around the yard, but the wiring to the brake light appears to have a short in it.

Hard to tell from the pics, does the gas tank have a seam down the center? Rubber covered or metal front foot pegs? Is there a rubber block in the front seat mount or is it metal to metal. No year models back then, they were titled as the year they were sold, I would guess that serial number puts it a little later than half way through the production run.

No seam that I see on the top, lots of dents, missing badges and a little rust (including some pinholes) though:

Rubber covered footpegs, and a C shaped piece of rubber over the metal of the front seat mount:

My 1966 CL77 is 1039XXX. Based on that and the production run numbers of CL77-1000001-1067524 from 1965 to 1967 it's fair to say that your CL77 is most likely a 1966.
That is what I dont get if the year is based on production order, yours is 1039XXX and its a 1966, britman has one that is CL1037XXX and its a 1967...

That would make sense as to why there is no real rhyme or reason to year vs serial.
