is oil supposed to come out of the alternator housing? i think the previous owner overfilled it in an effort to keep it mobile. it looked like the oil was up to at least 3/4 the length of the dipstick (WELL above the "full" range), and about 2/3 of the way up the alternator/stator rotor thingy.
is this bad? am i going to have to replace the alternator?

yes the bike was and has been level for months (was on kick stand for a while).

hard to tell exactly, but if you look close you can see the "shine" on the lower coils (or whatever those white plastic wrapped things are)

Yes, it is supposed to be soaked in oil.
Don't trip, that's how it was designed.

If it's overfull on oil, many times that's a sign that fuel is leaking into the crankcase. Smell your oil.

oil looked and smelled "brand new". was still golden (brown and delicious).

so, do you think it damaged the alternator? anything i can/should do to clean it up/out?

Alternator won't be damaged by overfilling oil- it's made to be in contact with oil- that's not a problem.
As fasterspyder stated-relax. Worry about other things.
