Can someone help me identify the correct model year for my CB450? The engine VIN number is CB450E 410259. I was under the impression that it was a 1970 K3 but other information I have seen says that VIN number with 41xxx are '71 K4.

My CL350 VIN number is 1026539. I think this is a '68 K0 is there any reason to think otherwise?

Is there a web site that outlines the VIN number models?

Mike, Try here.... BUT, it's the FRAME number that counts as to what K the bike is....(unless you're looking for engine parts)

Correct you are. For some reason I was thinking the frame and engine numbers should be the same (they are not). Thanks for the correction.

The site you posted is the same one I referenced. Unfortunately, it shows the '68 K0 and the '68-'69 K1 has having serial numbers that start with the same number.

The 450 frame number shows that I have a '71 K4 and not a '70 model like the title says. It doesn't look like there is much difference that I can tell. Does anyone know of any differences between the K3 and K4's?

On the Road, no time for a crafted reply, this is cut/paste from earlier post-

The CB350 K0/K1 are considered to be the same machine, and were sold concurrently.
You will not see distinctions, or even separate fiches for the two.
The only differences were minor cosmetics, like the seat pleating, taillight lenses, tanks, etc.

Only minor differences between CB450 K3/K4, again basically cosmetics.
Different seat pleating/shape, side cover emblems, tank stripes, small things. Locking gas cap MAY appear on some K4's as stock, generally never on K3 - however most were replaced with locking type later in the decade.
If your VIN starts CB450-41XXXX, it's K4.

I know we've probably beat this to death but I had one more question. Is the VIN number the defining criteria for determining model year? I took another look at the mfg plate on the head and it's stamped with 10/70 although the VIN indicates it's a 71 K4. I realize that that all the parts are probably interchangeable but now it's a matter of principle. The title indicates a '70 model. I realize that many times the title date was determined by when the bike was sold. Can I assume that even though the data plate indicates 10/70 that it was a 71 model that was built in 10/1970?

I'm most concerned in making sure I have the correct model year since the paint colors were slightly different and there might have been some other differences (seat pleats, etc.) that might come into play in trying to ensure proper model representation.

Thanks.

Mike.... Just like cars, anything manufactured after September is the following MODEL year.... With these, the "K" is the determining factor for correct parts....NOT the year.... Both the date and the VIN say its a 71, K4....

Thank you kindly for that clarification. I think I get it now.

Hi, I am a new one enrolled and in the first place salutes to all. I have many CB four, but it is my first CB450 Twin. Also my doubt is the model: K2, k3, k4…? The frame's number is 41135 ** and the bike was registered in 1971. One other thing: in the metallic plate on the "cannotto" (sorry, I do not know the translation to english language) of steering it is written "Honda cb 450 K3": it would not have to be sufficient to clear every doubt? In your bikes there is not this indication? Thanks for the answers!

The number references I have only apply to US models.... General export bikes use different although similar coding.... If the VIN plate riveted to the steering neck (or steering head) specifys K3, That is what I would assume it is........There are only minor differences in K3 to K4 anyway....Unless you are doing a "Concours" restoration, the point is probably moot....
