Discussion Starter #1
I was having a discussion with a couple guys about the black bombers and reasons they were unpopular in their day. I had always heard about styling, but someone mentioned possibly mechanical problems that were corrected on later models. Were there any mechanical issues that were specific to the black bomber that were corrected later? Aside from cosmetic changes to the engine and, of course, the 5 speed, what changes were made to the cb450 engine throughout its run?
Thanks,
Dave

There were virtually no changes to the 5-speed engine during its production run. There was a minor change with the shift shaft, oil pump, and second gear - and differing carbs.
Otherwise all 5-speeds are the same.
The 4-speed had no profound issues - there was a carb mod (springs for the carb slides, much like the GoldWing and Hawk series). They were just butt-ugly.
Of course, the 4-speeds and 5-speeds have a lot of differences.

I believe the magazine writers of the day referenced the "unsightly Honda hump" quite often in their articles.
