Hey everyone my name is AR I am new to this form. I have built 2 Yamaha DTs into little café racer then I am currently working on two Honda motorcycles 74 CL125 and a 81 CB400T Hawk. I need some help with finding out what I can do to fix my bobber CB400 Hawk. Anything that anyone could recommend at this point would be awesome and greatly appreciated!

Modifications from stock:
- Straight open pipes
- Air pod filters
- some jetting
- removed shocks and added hard tail struts
- fully simplified re wire
- replaced muffler gaskets and carb gaskets

Problems:
- it sounds like an air leak when I pull off the throttle coming down from a high speed it sounds like its sucking in air when I am not giving it gas.
- Top speed I can get it to is only 72mph
- back fire when letting off the throttle
- one muffler sounds stronger than the other

Welcome to the forum. Great to see another 400 series here. Got any pics of it?
As you have found out, going to pods and straight pipe have taken a lot of your original horse power.
With some experimenting with jetting, you may gain a little bit back.
You also may have a bad carburator insulators. How does it idle?

Best bet is to spend some time in the SOHC Fuel and carburation section of the forum and the project logs.

The air sucking sound is probably due to running pod filters, there's no noise cancellation with those.
