Hi!

A while back, I was riding along on my 1970 CB175 at about 50mph and my engine stopped working all of a sudden. I killed the ignition immediately and towed it home.

Turns out my timing chain broke due to it being too loose. I tore the engine apart and bought a new chain, but now I'm wondering whether I should replace anything while it's apart on the bench? My valves look fine, but I'm unsure as to whether I should replace them just in case they got bent when the chain snapped. Should I do the rings, clean up the cylinders, etc? The bike has 8000 miles on it. I bought new gasket set and such as well, but haven't purchased anything else.

I'd like to get it back together, but I also already have it apart on the bench, so I want to take the opportunity to do some work on it. I have a 74 CB550 as my main bike, but my wife is itching to learn to ride, so I figure this CB175 would be a good start for her.

Any help would be appreciated.

Okay.. So after some wise counsel from @66Sprint, I decided to go ahead and replace the rings and break the glaze on the cylinders.. This is what I found. The inside of the cylinder is still smooth.

Do I need to replace this piston or can I reuse? It was moving just fine through the cylinder before I removed it.

Your machinist will need to clean up/hone the cylinders and determine how big an overbore or if one is required......

That piston is junk.....Ideally, BOTH pistons should be the same size........Phone to discuss.......
