this is driving me crazy.

i took off the front fender, disconnected the brake cable... got new parts, went to place them back on.
tried to connect the arm on the brake to the forks, and:

from the other side:

apparently in a few minutes, the rod shrank?

anyone know whats going on here?

Rotate your brake backing plate backwards a little. You probably moved it a bit without knowing it.

indeed, it ended up being a geometry problem.

had to loosen some other bolts, but got it back in.
