I hope you won’t hold it against me but I’m a Harley guy. My 98 FLHT rolled over 100,000 last year and she’s a little loose and tired. I tore her down for a good goin’ over and well, you probably guessed it not enough time or green, to get her together for this years riding season.

The search was on, I ended up with a 1978 CB 400T that turned out to be more project than rider and that’s what brings me here.

Name’s Ernie, I’m 50, single, from Illinois (where I-80 crosses the Mississippi) and very active in the riders rights movement.

btw

Welcome to our group.... What problems are you having with the Honda right now?
Steve
I'm waitng on a set of air cut valves - it was running but very poorly

Someone had cleaned the carbs but not very well.

I recleaned them, adjusted float levels and bench set mixture screws and adjusted the valves.

They had smeared silicone on the diaphrams (air cut valves) in an attempt to stiffen them up a bit - I couldn't believe it.

Can I use an inline spark tester on this or will it damage the CID ignition.

It has obviuosly been sitting sometime cables all rusted up etc.

I've taken care of that.

This has to be a very low budget deal for me - I just got laid off.

Ernie,

I just was reading the new posts and saw yours. I'm glad you joined. You already helped a brother out with my post on torque wrenching. Thanks, again and welcome. I'm sorry you lost your job this economy is hitting eveyone real hard. My wife is in realestate and hasn't sold a house in months and she has no current prospects either.

Take care, Matt

Ernie,,, welcome to the group.
I think you are going to enjoy that bike when you get it running. It wont replace your Harley for what you love that bike for but it will put a smile on your face.
Sorry to hear about the job, we are all feeling the wrath of this economy, I think it will bring people closer together and that is what we are here for. Let us know what you need.
It sounds like you have great mechanical ability. You will find this bike very easy to work on, especially with the help of these guys.

Erine welcome to the boards.

we won't judge you about your other bikes, because most folks here have more than 1 brand in their stable as well.

Any help we can give let us know!

I’m really impressed with the variety in this forum, restorations, mild customs, café racers, choppers, bobbers such a wide range of styles and everybody helps each other. I’ve been watching for awhile before I joined and I haven’t seen any “I can’t believe you did that to a classic” type comments. Attaboys all around I’m happy to be a part of it.

I should have some updates on my project in the near future.

You helped me finding my rare rings so your def good in my book. :)

I'm also on the wagon with you, i lost my technician job and even lost enough hours delivering pizzas to not even afford to work there. I even tried to work for burger king the other day and they aren't even hiring.

Also kind of believe the times lately are making little things important again and it is bring everyone together. Do you have any pictures of either bike?

Didn't get a chance to welcome you before you posted on my bike. Oops. Welcome! I've been laid off a year+ now, had to sell my 550-4 last fall before I was done with it to catch up. I feel you. Michigan is now over 12% unemployed. Plus side is more time with my little man. Can't put a price on that.
We'll all be trendsetters when everyone rides a bike like in China.
Seriously though, if ya need anything, just ask. Oh, and more pics!

Thanks for the welcome - I really like it here. If I don't get something on the road this will be the first summer in over 20 years without a running bike. I usaully put 300 to 500 miles on my Harley every Sunday. I had big plans for it - but if I just do what is needed to get back on the road might be cheaper than the Honda at this point.

I really need to take a day and asess things to see where I'm at.
