In the past, especially with thumpers I've geared taller for less revs on the many country highways out my way. Thing is, under 60MPH and 6th gear on this bike is worthless. Would a smaller front sprocket and slighly shorter gearing make 6th gear more viable?

Dropping a tooth on the front sprocket would increase rpm, if you really need to ride in 6th gear at 60. Personally, I'd just stay in 5th.

Overdrive gearing is for an even cruising type mod, not acceleration. It will still accelerate in 6th but very slowly, to pass or gain speed quickly you need to drop to 5th or even 4th gear. This is what I've found with my 400 (less power) and the 6 speed trans.
You can use www.gearingcommander.com to see what effect the changes would have. If anything I'd say increase the rear 1 tooth, 1/2 step of a -1 front. Power band doesn't really start until 4K rpm
