Bike has been running good except for a strong smell of gas and black smoke from the exhuasts. I adjusted the mixture screws from 1- 3 turns out/in but no improvement. Would should I check for: float level?

I would clean, check, and reset (to factory specs) EVERYTHING in/about the carbs.... Particularly the float levels and shut-off needles and seats.........

Re: 80 CM400T - Burning Rich

Pulled the carbs and noted that the following jets in place:

Main jet on the emulsion tube is a 118
Jet beside the tube is a 72.

The manual says the main jet should be a 110. Would a smaller jet reduce the richness?

If that is the cause of the "richness", sure.

However, fouled plugs can be caused by a variety of issues, not just jetting........
