Hey everyone,

Thanks for letting me join the forum - super happy to be here! I'm posting from Seattle, home of the Pacific North Worst.

I picked up a brown CB450 last week (brown...do they even make brown vehicles anymore?). It barely runs so just going through the basics.

I ordered an oil filter off eBay, thinking it would be standard. Got this Emgo oil filter (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Emgo-Oil-F...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649).

Now I see in the FSM that this bike uses some weird kind of oil filter I've never seen before. "Centrifugal" they call it :D

Is it possible to just use the emgo filter or do I have to spend like three hours figuring out how the heck this filter works?

Welcome, and yes, there were 3 years of the CB450 in brown IIRC. This is a learning experience for you in two ways - first, you have to be careful to specify CB450K6 (or K7 depending on if your 450 was sold earlier or later in the year 1974) - or look for DOHC CB450 - when buying parts, because a very different SOHC engine design came later and some were called CB450 - which is what you got a filter for. I did the same thing while not reading closely enough when I bought clutch plates for mine and had to return them for the correct plates. Second, know that the centrifugal filter you mentioned IS the design used on all the DOHC 450 engines from '65 to '74 and on the DOHC CB500T that followed it until ending in '76. You may as well donate that filter to someone you know with a SOHC 450 model, or just return it.

If your frame number begins with CB450-600xxxx it's a K6, if -700xxxx it's a K7 but both could be titled 1974. Hondas were often held over to the next title year before being sold back then

Thanks for the replies everyone! Damn, this is a great forum! Such insights on such a simple question, thanks again.

I'll keep the oil filter around, for $7 it's really not worth the postage and hassle! Hey maybe it'll fit something else down the line. For now, I'll take the filter out over the weekend and clean it good fashion.

I'll post photos next time for sure :)
