72 cl 350 engine has compression gas and spark, I have confirmed that the left points are firing when the left piston is at tdc and its the firing stroke. The engine does not try to start, it backfires thru the carb and pops out the back. The plugs give a fat blue spark. Very puzzled.

Normally I would point to the breaker cam on the advancer, having been accidentally removed (pulling the advancer off the camshaft, sometimes the breaker cam comes off first) and put back on 180° out. You're absolutely sure the engine is on compression stroke when the left points break? Left cylinder intake valve opens, then closes, then the points break at LF?
