My advice is don't count out any amount of turns. I had a lot of trouble finding the sweet spot with my carbs until a mechanic set them 3 turns out and it ran like a dream! I think those factory settings are made for the factory, when all the components are new.
The factory settings are simply a starting point at which any new engine could be expected to idle or a setting at which it could meet emission requirements. Proper adjustment requires removal of the limiter tabs (if present) and adjusting each mixture screw to achieve highest idle rpm. Some folks do have success setting them a bit richer to enhance transition from idle, but, at throttle settings much above idle, they have little influence, all else being proper.
