Just to be clear, I mean the six inch lower tailpipe that installs on the back of the lower muffler. I found a NOS tailpipe which the original parts list indicates is the right part for the bike. The covers for the tailpipe are correct for the year, so I have to assume that the mufflers they install on are correct as well. As far as I can tell, the tailpipe is supposed to slide into the opening and it is held there by a screw.

The problem is that the tailpipe will not slide into the muffler, try as I might. The metal end seems to be a bit too large. I have thought of a few different ways that I could tackle this: 1/ Freeze tailpipe to constrict it, run bike to heat muffler and see if this solves the fitment problem long enough to get it in place, sand down the insert end and make it fit, 3/ try to use a clamp around the insert ends, and try to bend the insert portion in enough that I can finish it with a rubber hammer.

Please help! If you have done this before, please let me know what you did?

You could use something to swage the opening in the muffler a bit by using the handle on a screwdriver or a wooden dowel inserted in the muffler pipe in an effort to enlarge it slightly by working it around in a circle. Before doing that however, I would make sure the muffler and pipes are correct to the bike. As it has a screw to secure it, one would think it should slip in. Be careful though, these pipes are getting really rare.
