1985 rebel cmx250c only getting spark on one cylinder

272 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Emil
I was having the problem with only spark on the left cylinder, I spliced the black and yellow wire from the right side to the left, and it runs now. But Is that just to confirm that wire is bad and needs replacement, or could that splice be a permanent fix? I bought the bike 2 days ago, got it running yesterday.

Welcome to the forum!
The problem seems to be with the CDI or the wire coming from it.
That splice has been a "fix" that many have just left that way. It shouldn't harm anything to run it that way.
Glad you got it running well.
The bike starts up completely fine, idles amazing, can rev it up with no bogging, but when i put it into gear, and accelerate a little bit it sounds like it is skipping alot and bogging down a bit, but if I give it full throttle, it takes off completely fine, just fast. I also dont have an airfilter on. Took the carb off yesterday and looked inside and it was super clean. What could this be? Thank you so much for the help, this is my first bike ever! I bought it for $850, I am 17 and getting into bikes.
1st, what year is your Rebel? Is the connection that you made solid?

It is a 1985, and yes, the connection I did was pretty solid

That's got to be a hard ride. My back wouldn't be able to take that, OUCH!
I'm curious, many've said the Rebels with pipes cut like that sound like a lawnmower. I've never heard my Rebels without mufflers, therefore the question, how do you feel that it sounds?

Yes the ride is very rough! Going to get springs soon. And yes the pipes are pretty loud/clapped out a bit, but sounds amazing at idle.

That site is specifically devoted to 1st (like yours), & 2nd generation Rebels.
Much of your problem may be related to the cut pipes. If the carburetor has not been adjusted, it will lead to burned exaust valves.
