Working on getting my 1982 cm450E back on the road. I noticed when I bought it last year that the center stand sagged a little. Not wanting it to catch the road while in a turn I used a zip tie to hold it to the frame for the season. Well the rainy day and broken throttle cable have me looking for things to fix on it and I decided to make the center stand right. Turns out, where the spring attaches to the stand towards the ground has a 'S' hook used to make the connection (clearly not stock). Looking at the parts schematic online, it looks like I may be missing the bracket (#2 on this diagram Parts Finder Western Hills Honda Yamaha Cincinnati, OH (513) 662-7759).
Does that bracket go on the frame side of the spring or the ground side of the spring? Does anyone have a picture from their bike they could share to get me on the right track?
It looks as though they aren't sold anymore (bikebandit and westernhillshonda don't carry them). Any leads where I could find a new one?
It connects to the frame, the U facing down. Easiest way to get it attached is to pull the pivot out, connect everything and re-install the pivot.
Check the "Parts for Sale" section, several CM's being parted out.
That part goes on the engine side of the spring, the inner part of the C curves around the top pivot of the stand. I thought I had a picture showing it but can't seem to find it right now. I'll post it if I can find it.
I don't know if this will help, but I just got done (about 15 minutes ago) adding a center stand to my 1981 CM400E. It was actually much easier than I was lead to believe. Once I had everything cleaned, greased and back in-place, I looped 2 heavy-duty plastic zip-ties to the end of the spring, put a stout screwdriver through the looped zip-ties, and pulled it right into place. It took one try and went right into place. And I'm not a big or overly strong guy. If you need any advice on how to do any of this, just ask. The whole process was pretty easy.
Anyway, here are 3 pics of the centerstand in place. Hope this helps you. -J
Well this was all I need, pulled the ebay trigger on a nice looking center stand w/ spring and C bracket. Did you need any other hardware or is everything else that is needed already on the bike?
Nope the only other part is the pivot pin, which is already on your bike. I did have to clean it, lightly sand (600 grit sandpaper) it and grease the pin as well as the inside of the center stand tube.
You will have to remove the right side exhaust pipe (just the rear portion) along with the rear foot peg and bracket, the rear brake pedal (not completely; leave it attached to the push rod) and the bracket that keeps the drain tubes in place. Once that stuff is out, a gentle tap on the left side of the pivot pin/tube with a mallet and drift or screwdriver, should be all you need. None of that is difficult or takes very long.
Then you line up the pin/tube, hold the stand in place and slide the pin home. Place the large hole of the c-bracket over the rod on the frame, place the small hook of the spring into the small hole on the c-bracket. Then grab your zip ties, and do like I said with the spring, using a screwdriver and both hands to pull the sprint into place on the stand. Make sure they are the beefiest zipties you can find. One of em broke just as I popped the spring into place and hit me in the face. Wear safety glasses just in case. I didn't, but got lucky.
Once you have the stand and spring in place, put everything back on, cleanup, pat yourself on the back and go for a ride!
Excellent! Well done. Another benefit to having a center stand that I just realized (aside from making tire changes easier): oil change!
I just pulled the side covers off today and bead-blasted 'em. A family of mice (which later got into the air-cleaner and died) peed all over the top of the engine, which ran down and ate through the clear-coat and corroded the aluminum covers. Now comes the arduous task of sanding and polishing them back to their original luster.
Hey, I know this is an old post, but I just got your exact bike (CM450e) and am about to replace the centre stand. Old one is missing one leg and I've already got a nice condition replacement. I was about to do what I thought was a pretty straight forward swap, when I read in my Clymer's manual that you should take off the rear wheel?? That seems a little overkill to me and it doesn't look like it was mentioned here in the description. Am I missing anything?
No need to remove the rear wheel. No need to read the Clymer manual either since it's full of errors. You need the FSM, PM sent
